finding the light

The last month has been spent navigating the waters of this new schedule and new lifestyle of mine.  I've lost track of dates and have been working harder than I ever have before, but somehow enjoying every moment of it.  There is a feeling of calm and freedom that I have never enjoyed before; no matter how busy I am get; and that is priceless.

Here are a few moments from the couple of last months, shot with my new 50mm lens that seems to discover in the most beautiful light ever.

summer shapes

I guess I must be yearning for summer, or at least springtime, because this morning I found myself playing around with photos I took last summer at the Outer Banks. Yep, I'll take warmer weather any time.

weekend recall part one

As I shared last week, we had a pretty action packed weekend. One of the highlights of it was that on Sunday afternoon we drove up towards the NC mountains to watch the mass ascension of hot air balloons at the Carolina BalloonFest. I have had a long running obsession with hot air balloons so this was pretty magical to me.
The weather was perfect and we ate a greasy bloomin' onion as we watched about thirty hot air balloons inflate and take flight all around us. I was amazed at how close the spectators were allowed to be to the balloons and was mesmerized by some of the really beautiful designs. (This is not including the huge advertisements or 200-foot tall US Constitution). We took what seemed like a million photos but here are some of my favorite shots on my phone. Gotta love those apps.

a little lens flare

Both the end of summer and these lovely photos by bri inspired me to do a little photoshopping of my own today. It is always fun to play around with your photos, especially when the end result is not too achieve a perfect image. Plus I am getting really good at not getting started on those back to school responsibilities.

southern wedding magazine

I picked up a copy of Southern Wedding Magazine today and was completely blown away. The feel and aesthetic of this magazine is consistent all the way through and is nothing like the Bride magazines that I can't quite force myself to look at. This little gem has great d.i.y. projects, awesome creative vendor ideas and such a fresh modern style. And I am beyond super excited because the cover story was shot by our wedding photographers- Joey and Jessica. Have I mentioned on here how I can't wait to work with them and see how they capture our day? They are so talented- and this was all shot on film people!
Wedding planning can be incredibly daunting. I have struggled in my head with how to make a day that is unique and reflective of us as a couple and pays tribute to all the people who love us, while trying to keep it as simple and homemade as possible. Even thinking about caterers and florists makes me antsy. So I am happy to see this fresh perspective on weddings and it has given me some new energy for going ahead with our plans.
Oh, and I ordered my wedding dress this weekend :)

a little torn up

Been feeling a lot like this lately- a little beat up. I see beautiful things all around me but have been unable to produce a damn thing of my own that is worth anything in so long. I can see so much but cannot do and it is getting terribly frustrating.

Image by the gifted cari ann wayman. See more on her blog and her flickr.

collaborations

Loving these collaborative photos between photographer Macushla Burke and illustrator Kelly Smith (of birdy&me). I have featured Kelly's work on here before and she continues to impress me with her talent. Check out her entire portfolio.

haiti

Watching all of the coverage of Haiti on the news is devastating. I cannot begin to imagine what the people of this country are going through, along with their loved ones in other parts of the world. It is hard to be here and feel helpless while so much death and heartache takes place elsewhere. I am sending in a donation to the Red Cross tonight, but even that does not feel like enough. I encourage anyone else that can to try to do the same, check with your local news stations, they probably have some relief efforts/fundraisers set up.

I wanted to share these photos taken by children in Haiti of their native land, under the non-profit program Zanmi Lakay::

This is the only one I am able to copy, but please take a look at the rest, they are savagely beautiful.

What are your ideas to reach out and help the people of Haiti?

pretty places

Would love to be in a warm, sunny, outdoor space under these colorful lanterns.
